Juxtaposition: Nature and architecture

Initial mindmap to develop ideas for Nature and Architecture themes

In the Juxtaposition project I will answer the question of how the Juxtaposition of the use of nature within everyday life, and the structure of Brutalist Architecture, can be represented through a sustainable luxury Interiors collection.

This will involve researching thoroughly into nature, specifically leaves and plants from the New Forest in Southampton, and how they can be used within our everyday life purposes. The organic, and textural marks, and unplanned growth within nature in the New Forest construct soft fluid movements and textures. I will use first hand research to explore the marks and textures that can be created from using plants within my drawing explorations.

I will expand my knowledge on the geometric and harsh lines found in Architecture, and the journey that led to Brutalist architecture; the deconstruction of the movement and the reasoning behind the limited buildings still used. Repetition, structure and abstraction will be depicted, highlighting a high contrast between the two themes visually. The unplanned, methodical growth of Architecture will be captured within first hand drawing highlighting industrial materials, machinery, and manpower.

I intend to think sustainably throughout the project, to push the boundaries on sustainably sourced fabrics and materials, to produce a luxury Interiors collection suitable for a luxury hotel. I will answer my research question through the investigation of sustainable textile production. This will be accomplished through natural plant dyeing, using plants, leaves, berries, etc. gathered from my surrounding area. Throughout the project I will sustainably source any fabrics and materials, and aim to produce everything in nonchemical and harmful ways. I will enquire into sustainable fabric companies to query how it has been made, looking at the soil-to-soil structure and Circular Economy in the Textiles industry; to ensure that all ofmy actions encourage an environmentally friendly future.

I will represent the Juxtaposition of nature and architecture through a collection of striking, statement wall art pieces that will be eye-catching and intend to become a conversation starter; familiarizing the viewer with sustainable textile design and the boundaries that can be pushed from environmentally friendly production. The use of sustainable textiles within a luxury commercial establishment is uncommon and unestablished, and as a result will showcase the boundless extent that sustainability can be taken. I aim for this to demonstrate how nature and architecture can flourish by the advantage of sustainable thinking.
