The Art of Mistakes

Design through mishaps

“If I was the artist, and I was in the studio, then whatever I was doing in the studio must be art”

Bruce Newman

Artists that embrace the mistakes in their work:

Benmoyal hand-weaved the tape from discarded video and cassette tapes with recycled yarns and Tencel – a fibre made from wood pulp – on a loom to create the fabrics.

Ai Weiwei: Like many of Ai Weiwei’s works, Template relates to change in China. It is composed of wooden doors and windows salvaged from Ming and Qing Dynasty houses which had been demolished to make way for new development. On displaying the installation outdoors in Germany in 2007, the structure collapsed after being exposed to wind and rain. Ai Weiwei embraced this change: “When I saw how the site had collapsed – turned into some other shape – I was quite impressed,” he told Bloomberg. “It comes from ruins and now it’s really a ruin”.

SCAMPER technique is a mnemonic that stands for:

  • Substitute.
  • Combine.
  • Adapt.
  • Modify.
  • Put to another use.
  • Eliminate.
  • Reverse.

To explore the art of mistakes within my project I used the concept to create a new outcome to two themed collages I made for the Juxtaposition project.

For these collages I focused on Nature for one, taking a British garden approach and using a large amount of greens, and Architecture, focusing on structure and the shapes found within the buildings. For these collages I gathered imagery from leaflets I had of nearby gardens, castles and attractions nearby. I added various papers and fabrics to achieve various surfaces, and added sections of hand drawn drawings of related imagery.

Although I thought these collages turned out successfully, I manipulated it by tearing, crumpling, and folding to produce a new outcome. This emphasizes the art of mistakes and how you can adapt to create a more developed and interesting final out come.
