Textile Designers and Repeats: Denise Anne

After reading through this task, Denise Anne instantly sprung to my mind. As well as being a Watercolor Artist, Illustrator, & Pattern Designer, she also hosts classes on skillshare to help people to progress their ability in creating illustrative designs that ‘connect us to moments of joy’. During my undergraduate I used some of her learning classes to strengthen my skills and develop the patterns used within my project.

The key to her designs, in my opinion, is the placement used for each motif or shape added. The composition that Denise chooses allows the design to not be overcrowded nor empty, but to showcase each flower or leaf to its full potential. This is effective when repeated as it makes the design flow more and be cohesive. This is something that I plan to be aware of when developing my design ideas into repeats in my Juxtaposition project.

The choice of colour within these designs are complimentary to each other, and are appropriate for the setting they are used in. The use of light pastel shades work well with the florals used and create peacefulness and softness in the design. Each collection on her website includes the collection coordinates with different colourways of the design, other designs that work well against it, and the original motif that has been developed into the collection. This is inspiring to me as it shows a depth to her collection, and highlights the journey that she’s been through, and subsequently making you as the consumer want to keep viewing.
